Flowers as a Cheap Decorating Alternative

What’s a girl to do when she needs something to bright her mood or give a room some oomph? Flowers can go a long way as a cheap decorating trick. It all depends on what kind of flower you choose and how you keep them fresh. Some blooms will even last 2 weeks.

My choice for instant gratification is the simple, cheap and long lasting carnation. You also get bonus blooms on each stem. You can buy them in the grocery store for $3.00 or $4.00 dollars. Carnations can be very successful and give a pop of color to a room. They are available in many colors and can be used to echo accent colors in cushions or artwork.

To begin, place your flowers next to your vase. Decide how high you want your flowers to be above the vase. Eyeball it then cut the part you want off.

Cut the stems diagonally at the “joints”, the bulbous parts of the stem. I squash the end or make a small cut at the bottom of the stem. This allows the flower to absorb more water.

Next, trim all the foliage that will sit below the waterline of your vase as this will make your water greenish. I also use lukewarm water. Cold water can be like a shock treatment to the plant. Any excess flowers that you have cut off, you can put in smaller vases.

Cut the stems every couple of days or so. Remember to change the water too, when it is beginning to look cloudy.

Finally, I like to place my bouquets on a low coffee table or close to the front door, so I see them often as I walk by. A fresh vase of flowers puts a smile on my face and a hop in my step and I am ready for the rest of the day.
